In collaboration with Live at the Pagoda, SUBSTANCE is coming to the South Bay! It’s actually about time we made our presence felt out here since most of our crew have strong ties to the area. We see it as a homecoming of sorts and we’re very much looking forward to bringing our vibe and sound to the 408. Y’all better get ready.. We’re also celebrating the birth of one of our most beloved crew members 2PAIRJER (aka, Jeremy). As one of the main players behind the scenes, his contributions to what we’ve achieved thus far have been invaluable. He’s supported us since day one, and it’s because of people like him that we continue to do what we do. If you see him this Saturday, don’t forget to buy him a drink (kidding). February also marks somewhat of a going-away party for one of our key maestros, DJ BLUZ. Since our inaugural event last March he’s helped developed our sound, consistently keeping the bar high with his pristine selecting. He’s at his best when he’s live, and this Saturday may be one of the last times you’ll be able to catch him! These are going to be some tough shoes to fill. Time to hold auditions, perhaps? Finally, special thanks to the Fairmont as well as the folks from Live at the Pagoda for hosting our event. Through the curation of Thomas Ramon Aguilar of Universal Grammar and early on by Michael Grammer of New Sense has led to the creation of a music series that showcases a global sound system consisting of live performances, DJ Sets, and film screenings of artist’s works. A room without borders.

With the year coming to an end we thought it would be appropriate to go out in spectacular fashion, so instead of inviting one guest we’ve decided to go with an unprecedented two guests! It’s just something we’re not accustomed to, as we normally have at least 2 of our residents hold things down. However, with the resume’s these guys have we’re not worried one bit.
This month we’ve got MEL and MARKY (aka, the Enriquez Brothers?) as well as the unmistakeable SEXY RYAN running things for us. Yes it’s true that Mel and Marky are actually brothers, however it’s not very often that you get to see them on the same bill. With their deejay careers spanning 2 separate paths, it’s baffling to think that they’re brothas from the same motha. Despite the difference in styles, each brother brings a wealth of experience and creativity when it comes to party-rockin. If you’re wondering how things will pan out dance-floor wise, you know we’ve already got that part covered. Now before we bid farewell for the year, we’d like to give some special birthday shoutouts to our dear friends RJAY YAMAT, RYAN CABALBAG, as well as our guest deejay MEL ENRIQUEZ. THE WHOOLIGAN joins us this month.

We normally have 5 weeks between SUBSTANCE events, but this month it returns after 4. We enjoy these uncommon occurrences like we enjoy playing uncommon music during our sets. Although we have 1 week less to prepare, we couldn’t be any more ready to wreck shop.

This month, we have THE WHOOLIGAN blessing our decks alongside rotating residents THATGIRL and SEXY RYAN. As true music lovers we know what a WMC caliber deejay sounds like, and WHOOLIGAN certainly fits the bill. His repertoire of music fits our tastes like a glove, and we couldn’t find a more appropriate guest.

On a final note, it’s a shame that summer’s ending but it’s been a great one. Let’s ride it til the end..

See you soon.

WHO IS THE WHOOLIGAN?

Futuristicsoulsexyghettotechtronicboombap is the only way to describe the beguiling musical potions of Julio ‘The Whooligan’ Galvez. He is a musical chemist; concocting beats as a producer and experimenting with their reactive characteristics as a DJ. His laboratory varies; one day he is locked away in the studio composing musical Monets; the next, he’s likely to be found spinning and collaborating with the world’s hottest artists, garnering media honors and leaving everyone salivating for the next gig.

What began as a pastime, listening to and learning salsa music from his parents, in his hometown in California’s East Bay, turned into a fascination. Like all great artists, that fascination soon morphed into a passion; and that passion was honed into a skill. Today, The Whooligan is an intricate part of the Bay Area’s music scene and the undeniable flair for his craft along with an impressive work ethic have quickly gained him fans and respect beyond his native soil, as demonstrated by his #4 ranking in Music Culture Today Magazines Top 10 Favorite DJ Sets from the 2009 Winter Music Conference in Miami, FL. The Whooligan again represented the Bay Area, as well as Om Records, during WMC 2010 & 2011 with DJ sets and parties alongside artists Mark Farina, Pete Kruder, Dirty Vegas, Colette, Jazzanova, Daz I Kue, Jazzy Jeff, J. Rocc, DJ Scratch and many more.

National tours sponsored by industry powerhouses such as MTV, Myspace, Island Def Jam and Sony, and performing with artists such as Bugz In The Attic, Vikter Duplaix, Kid Sister, Lupe Fiasco, and Diplo, to name a few, have secured The Whooligan’s standing as one of the most hard-working and respected selectors on the West Coast. He sets the tone for every party he spins, with a refreshingly new and old school style, so to witness The Whooligan is to be invited into his world for a musical journey that simultaneously entertains and enlightens, indulging the senses and issuing only one command: dance. Whether on the turntables at the flyest clubs, events or national music conferences, or in his production element generating smooth, sample-laden beats, The Whooligan puts the same amount of verve and finesse into his craft and executes the roles of both DJ and Producer with flawless expertise. The beats and scratches in his sets are methodically engineered to keep crowds moving like the pistons of a well-oiled engine.

To date, The Whooligan has appeared as a DJ or producer on many projects, recently: 40Love “Dreams Don’t Sleep”, Keelay and Zaire Ridin’ High (MYX Label), Jesse Boykins III The Beauty Created (Nomadic Music) and Mark Farina’s chart-topper: Mushroom Jazz, Vol. 6 (OM Records), in addition to his own recent mixtapes: Live WMC2010 & 2011, Deep Empyrean, Talk To Me, The Star Gazers and Up Up and Away: The Spacetrumentals. The Whooligan is a proud member of San Francisco based Electronic Soul group, 40Love and the OM Records family.

You don’t want to miss this one.

We’ve wanted him for a long time, and we finally have him. This month we’re featuring the one and only FREDDIE JOACHIM. We’re sure most of you already know who he is and what he’s capable of. If you’ve never heard of him, he can be described simply as a producer with an unmistakable sound and extraordinary talent.

We’re also huge fans of his label MELLOW ORANGE (melloworange.com), whose releases show us that good hip-hop still exists.

And speaking of labels, we also have FEEL MY GROOVES as our featured vendor this month. If you’re into vinyl collecting for reasonable prices, then you’re in for a treat.

Substance isn’t just about uptempo grooves. We like to explore the full spectrum of music regardless of genre or bpm. As long as it’s innovative, ground-breaking, futuristic, and genuine, we’re feeling it.

Please file under Nujabes, DJ Mitsu, Gagle, Grooveman Spot, Mushroom Jazz, and other similar things.

See you soon..

WHAT IS FEEL MY GROOVES?

OUR CUSTOMERS

DJs, producers, record collectors, but usually not audiophiles. Their records do not have to be in pristine or totally mint condition. However, if they are; of course, that’s a plus. The records just have to look nice and play well.

Our customers know what they want, but don’t want to pay top dollar for it.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

90% of our records are in near mint to very good condition. We inspect and research every record before it goes up on our website. Our prices are usually a $2 – $10 below online marketplace value.

If condition is a deciding factor on a particular record you’d like to buy, send us an email and we’ll be happy to answer back within 1-2 business days to let you know an accurate description of the shape it is in.

HOW IT STARTED

Feel My Grooves started out as an artist management company in the late ’90s. Eventually that died out and I moved on to the marketing & advertising world.

Fast forward to 2004…At the time I was an avid craigslist seller. I sold EVERYTHING on craigslist. Including some records I was looking to part with. People kept asking for more so I quickly put together a completely hand-coded HTML page and called it, Feel My Grooves Vinyl. You’d have to send an email to place an order, I’d reply with the records that were available and the shipping costs, then payment was arranged by paypal. The first customer was from Finland. It was a wrap…I went digging at stores and in people’s homes frequently and kept the site up and running for about 2 years. Afterwards, I moved onto being a private dealer, selling at shows or out of my home.

Finally, the site is back up, new and improved with a shopping cart (coming very soon!) and everything! You’re still welcome to email me for questions before buying. The shopping cart is just there for people who want to skip the extra step.

Special thanks to sites like the-breaks.com, gemm, discogs and ebay for being my reference points throughout my years of diggin’.

SUBSTANCE is a monthly musical event formerly held every second Friday in San Mateo at an intimate venue otherwise known as Attic.

Its main goals are:

1. To bring like-minded music lovers together.

2. To represent for music/musicians/deejays of the highest caliber who often get overlooked.

3. To introduce people to the beauty and brilliance of underground music (we tend to gravitate towards soul, jazz, funk, house, broken-beat, boogie, uk funky/garage, world rhythms, and other progressive styles).

4. To attract people to come to our event strictly because of what we play. Selection is what we intend to build our reputation on.

We feel that most music in the public eye is all flash, gimmicks, but lacking SUBSTANCE. We want to fill that void.

SUBSTANCE believes in:

Musicianship
Unrecognized Talent
Hard-Earned Digging
Skillful Selecting
Solid Fundamentals
Cutting-Edge Quality
Intelligent Composition
Independent Thinking
Paying Dues
Humility
Versatility
Staying Informed
Being Yourself.
