In collaboration with Live at the Pagoda, SUBSTANCE is coming to the South Bay! It’s actually about time we made our presence felt out here since most of our crew have strong ties to the area. We see it as a homecoming of sorts and we’re very much looking forward to bringing our vibe and sound to the 408. Y’all better get ready..

We’re also celebrating the birth of one of our most beloved crew members 2PAIRJER (aka, Jeremy). As one of the main players behind the scenes, his contributions to what we’ve achieved thus far have been invaluable. He’s supported us since day one, and it’s because of people like him that we continue to do what we do. If you see him this Saturday, don’t forget to buy him a drink (kidding).

February also marks somewhat of a going-away party for one of our key maestros, DJ BLUZ. Since our inaugural event last March he’s helped developed our sound, consistently keeping the bar high with his pristine selecting. He’s at his best when he’s live, and this Saturday may be one of the last times you’ll be able to catch him! These are going to be some tough shoes to fill. Time to hold auditions, perhaps?

Located at the Fairmont Hotel in downtown San Jose, THE PAGODA, has become an International music room, that transforms from the Pagoda Restaurant and Lounge where music is first and worshipped by it’s patrons and where the musicians and artists alike are venerated for their performance of their respective art-forms. The Live At The Pagoda Music Series was launched by Universal Grammar, New Sense and The Fairmont Hotel in October 2010.

Through the curation of Thomas Ramon Aguilar of Universal Grammar and early on by Michael Grammer of New Sense has led to the creation of a music series that showcases a global sound system consisting of live performances, DJ Sets, and film screenings of artist’s works. A room without borders.

So we’re in a state of transition right now. Due to forces beyond our control, we had no choice but to relocate to another venue. Lucky for us, we were able to lock down THE SUMMIT just in time for this month. January marks our first event in San Francisco, and we couldn’t be anymore excited!

2012 has been a tumultuous year thus far. With THE SUMMIT closing at the end of the month, and SUBSTANCE in the process of relocating, 2012 looks to be a year of significant change. Some people think that change is harmful & detrimental, but we see it as an opportunity to progress, evolve, and flourish.

We’d like to give massive shouts to the folks at THE SUMMIT for all they’ve achieved for the past year and a half. Although it’s sad to see them go, they’re already planning their next move and so are we.

With the year coming to an end we thought it would be appropriate to go out in spectacular fashion, so instead of inviting one guest we’ve decided to go with an unprecedented two guests! It’s just something we’re not accustomed to, as we normally have at least 2 of our residents hold things down. However, with the resume’s these guys have we’re not worried one bit.

This month we’ve got MEL and MARKY (aka, the Enriquez Brothers?) as well as the unmistakeable SEXY RYAN running things for us. Yes it’s true that Mel and Marky are actually brothers, however it’s not very often that you get to see them on the same bill.

With their deejay careers spanning 2 separate paths, it’s baffling to think that they’re brothas from the same motha. Despite the difference in styles, each brother brings a wealth of experience and creativity when it comes to party-rockin. If you’re wondering how things will pan out dance-floor wise, you know we’ve already got that part covered.

Now before we bid farewell for the year, we’d like to give some special birthday shoutouts to our dear friends RJAY YAMAT, RYAN CABALBAG, as well as our guest deejay MEL ENRIQUEZ. We’d like to thank them (as well as everyone else who’s attended a SUBSTANCE event) for continuing to support our movement and we look forward to what 2012 has to offer.

WHO IS WONWAY?

Wonway is a creative hiphop doitall: MC Freestyle Champion, DJ, radio host of ThinkBeat Radio (All Day Play and KPFA) and co-architect of the legendary San Francisco Wednesday Night Sessions with The Park. In his short time returning to being a full time DJ, he has already played with Afrika Bambaataa, Tony Touch, Bobbito, Garth Trinidad, Neil Armstrong, and Quantic just to name a few.

His afrolatin hiphop jump, Makossa has grown in popularity to spawn the incredible monthlies in SF, Makossa West, and most recently New York, with the Makossa BK Cookout. His style is soulful party hiphop fused with Latin, Afrobeat and the occasional slap. His “Makossa Classics” mix series is crack for dancing fiends and a must have for music heads, receiving accolades from people such as Erykah Badu and feautured on numerous influential websites including Okayplayer and Remezcla.

As one of the hardest working hustlers in the biz (we hear he’s a member of at least 4 other crews), he’s continued to inspire, influence, and impact our lives on a daily basis. An ambassador of music, fashion, and the arts, he’s left a lasting imprint in everything he’s been involved in. Despite all of his successes, he’s always remained humble and that’s why we love him so much.

It’s unfathomable to imagine what our world would be like without him. He’s the soul of San Jose. The Mayor.

THE WHOOLIGAN joins us this month.

We normally have 5 weeks between SUBSTANCE events, but this month it returns after 4. We enjoy these uncommon occurrences like we enjoy playing uncommon music during our sets. Although we have 1 week less to prepare, we couldn’t be any more ready to wreck shop.

This month, we have THE WHOOLIGAN blessing our decks alongside rotating residents THATGIRL and SEXY RYAN. As true music lovers we know what a WMC caliber deejay sounds like, and WHOOLIGAN certainly fits the bill. Always an avid listener and collector of hip hop, jazz, and soul music, Freddie finally began djing in ’96, which slowly progressed into recording and production, and musicianship. Since then, he has continued to produce for many artists, as well as license music with many international companies.

Freddie released his first full-length, In With Time, in the Spring of 2008, exclusive to Japan label, Subcontact. The album featured such artists as, Aloe Blacc (Stones Throw), Blu, Othello, Profile (Sound Providers), Choice37, Surreal, Paten Locke, and more. DJs, producers, record collectors, but usually not audiophiles. Their records do not have to be in pristine or totally mint condition. However, if they are; of course, that’s a plus. The records just have to look nice and play well.

Our customers know what they want, but don’t want to pay top dollar for it.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

90% of our records are in near mint to very good condition. We inspect and research every record before it goes up on our website. Our prices are usually a $2 – $10 below online marketplace value.

If condition is a deciding factor on a particular record you’d like to buy, send us an email and we’ll be happy to answer back within 1-2 business days to let you know an accurate description of the shape it is in.

HOW IT STARTED

Feel My Grooves started out as an artist management company in the late ’90s. Eventually that died out and I moved on to the marketing & advertising world.

Fast forward to 2004…At the time I was an avid craigslist seller. I sold EVERYTHING on craigslist. Including some records I was looking to part with. People kept asking for more so I quickly put together a completely hand-coded HTML page and called it, Feel My Grooves Vinyl. You’d have to send an email to place an order, I’d reply with the records that were available and the shipping costs, then payment was arranged by paypal. The first customer was from Finland. It was a wrap…I went digging at stores and in people’s homes frequently and kept the site up and running for about 2 years. Afterwards, I moved onto being a private dealer, selling at shows or out of my home.

Finally, the site is back up, new and improved with a shopping cart (coming very soon!) and everything! You’re still welcome to email me for questions before buying. The shopping cart is just there for people who want to skip the extra step.
